Spears Tarquynn grabs Pall Mall
Spears Tarquynn (9-4JF) completed an unbeaten run through the competition with an ultra-game effort to outstay Conker All in the £8,000 final of the williamhill.co.uk Pall Mall over 450m at Oxford Tuesday night.
Trained by Claude Gardiner at Hove, Spears Tarquynn was squeezed early by Conker All and Farloe Rio, but recovered to turn second behind the first-named greyhound - who had traded as short as 1-10 on Betfair in running - into the back straight and made inexorable progress, coming to challenge on the run for home.
Finishing much the stronger, Spears Tarquynn soon got on top and went on to score by a length from Conker All in 26.52sec, with Unique Option running a decent race in third after a troubled passage.
The first greyhound owned by Adam and Jenny Spears, the winner earned a 66-1 quote (from 100-1) from the sponsors for the Blue Square Greyhound Derby and trainer Gardiner confirmed he is now Wimbledon-bound.
“But we might give him a day off first,” joked Gardiner, successful in the premier Classic with the late Allen Gift in 2002. “Spears Tarquynn is such a trier and battler, I knew halfway down the back straight he'd catch the leader and win.”
It was a night of track records on the supporting card with new bests being set for both six-bend distances of 595m and 645m by Bower Turbo and Primitive Way respectively.
The Richard Yeates-trained Bower Turbo, making his six-bend debut, turned in front and was never headed afterwards although favourite Genesis Dreamultimately made him work hard for a neck success in 35.87sec, an improvement of 31 spots on the previous record of Little Honcho.
Primitive Way, trained by David Pruhs, took even more off the 645m best when storming to a nine lengths victory in 38.98sec, 38 spots quicker than the 2004 mark of Black Pear.
A scrappy marathon saw the lead change hands a number of times before Rosstemple Dream got to the front approaching the seventh bend and she held off strong-finishing Ardagh Vibes by one and a half lengths in 53.17sec to complete a double for Reading handler Yeates.
“Rosstemple Dream is a lovely bitch and this smaller track suited her better than Walthamstow where the straights are longer,” said Yeates afterwards. “Bower Turbo has just been missing his break, but tonight he came out and showed what he can do.”
