The Blue Square Greyhound derby gets underway at Plough Lane a week today.

Having been rescheduled from the original Thursday, Friday Saturday due to lack of entries the fun is almost here.

For anyone who has never experienced a night at the dogs before, i advise you to get off ure asses o:D and get down to Plough Lane for one of the 2 nights of 1st round heats on Friday 2nd or Saturday 3rd May.

The first 4 qualify from each heat, and the draw will take place live on Blue Square TV at 1pm this coming sunday.

A very hot Derby this year with £100,000 up for grabs and the market is headed by recent Scottish Derby winner Tyrur Kieren, Kieren is also on course for the £1 million bonus if he can complete the treble of the English, Scottish and Irish Derby.

My fancy for the competition is last years Champ Westmead Lord. Currently a 20/1 best priced with a number of firms (I have taken 40/1 all through the winter) The reigning champ is looking to retain the title for his owner Bob Morton and Trainer Nick Savva who have won the past 3 English Derbys with Westmead Hawk completing a sensational double in 2005/2006 and Westmead Lord in 2007.

I have been going Greyhound Racing in all the 20 years of my life so far and the Derby is simply the best!!!!!!!!

Here is a schedule of proceedings for this years competition which will conclude on Saturday 31st May. The finals night in particular will be a great nights racing. The roar that goes up as the last dog is locked away for the final is spine tingling.

Blue Square Derby draw . . .
136 names were placed into the Blue Square Derby draw drum. The field reduced by the 11.50am withdrawal lame of Lethal Freddie. Local runner Roquefort Addson was withdrawn overnight.

There are 53 unseeded runners, 37 middles and 46 wides.

There is a total of 23 heats: 11 heats on Friday, 12 on Saturday. The first four will qualify from each heat; there will be four heats where the first five will qualify. Two heats will now be for five runners only, from which the first four qualify.
