Default Moyes lands a gamble for Man Utd punters

So the circus has finally come to close and the worst kept secret in football is now out in the open ..

A lot of hefty bets were landed and now David Moyes has finally been appointed Manchester United manager on six-year deal

....The Everton manager was recommended by the outgoing Sir Alex Ferguson and his appointment has been unanimously approved by the United board.

Ferguson said: "When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes we unanimously agreed on David Moyes. David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic.

"I've admired his work for a long time and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of assistant manager here. He was a young man then at the start of his career and has since gone on to do a magnificent job at Everton. There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club.”

Moyes was clearly delighted to be given the job.

“It’s a great honour to be asked to be the next manager of Manchester United," he said.

"I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done and for the football club.

“I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn’t something that comes around very often and I’m really looking forward to taking up the post next season.

“I have had a terrific job at Everton, with a tremendous chairman and board of directors and a great set of players. Between now and the end of the season, I will do everything in my power to make sure we finish as high as possible in the table.

“Everton’s fantastic fans have played a big part in making my years at Goodison so enjoyable and I thank them wholeheartedly for the support they have given me and the players. Everton will be close to me for the rest of my life.”

Moyes leaves Everton after more than 11 years in charge, during which time he has consistently kept the club in the top half of the Premier League table - even achieving a fourth-place finish in the league in 2005 to earn a Champions League spot.

He has failed to win a trophy, however, with his only honour as a manager still being the League One title (then known as Division Two) with Preston North End back in 2000.

The Scot now has the huge task of replacing arguably the greatest manager in football's long history.

A six-year contract is a huge show of faith in Moyes and a clear signal that United are seeking continuity with the man to replace Ferguson, who will stay on as a member of the board.

Jose Mourinho had also been linked with the post but the Real Madrid coach's abrasive style had previously attracted criticism from United legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

Charlton said on Thursday: “I have always said that we wanted the next manager to be a genuine Manchester United man. In David Moyes, we have someone who understands the things that make this such a special club. We have secured a man who is committed to the long-term and will build teams for the future as well as now. Stability breeds success.

“David has tremendous strength of character and recognises the importance of bringing young players through and developing them alongside world class talent. At United, I think David will be able to express himself. I’m delighted he has accepted and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Moyes met Everton chairman Bill Kenwright on Wednesday to tell him that he wished to leave, and the Toffees confirmed on Thursday that their manager of over 10 years is to go at the end of the season.

"The manager met chairman Bill Kenwright early yesterday evening and confirmed his desire to join Manchester United," Everton said in a statement on their website.

"The chairman, on behalf of the club, would like to place on record his thanks to David for the massive contribution he has made to Everton since his arrival in March 2002. He has been an outstanding manager."

Bennys view .. Well good luck to him, but has he ever won anything in his time at Everton ? .....

I can see this ending in tears......

I dont think Moyes is anywhere near good enough to manage a club like Man Utd...

No experience of really competing for a major trophy and even less when it comes to Champions League...

I doubt he will see the season out......

Great, that's just ridiculous. Choose a manager who's never won a trophy?
Everton?
Jose where are you

Default Darth Vader could lead to Star Wars !!

The hounds are howling !!!!!

Just hours after David Moyes was named the new manager of Manchester United, fans were already coming together on social networking sites to call for his sacking.

It seems almost like a sick joke, but the hashtag #MoyesOut was quickly trending on Twitter, initially in the Manchester area and then across Britain.

Some of the complainants appear to be Manchester City fans, but a fair few of the commenters appear genuinely unhappy at the decision to appoint the Everton manager.

"Moyes appointment is the start of the decline! All we have now is memories!" Tweeted 'nolhman'.

Another, going by the handle Zawari876, had a grim prediction: "6 year trophy drought coming up"

But it seems that the vast majority of the Tweets - and therefore the reason why #MoyesOut soared to the top of the trending charts - were from bemused football fans wondering why on earth #MoyesOut was trending in the first place.

At first glance we at World of Sport chuckled at this story, laughing at both the fickleness of football fans and the bizarre way in which Twitter creates self-fulfilling prophecies when it comes to hashtags.

But there are genuine and legitimate concerns about the appointment of Moyes - after all, the #moyesout hashtag has trended many times this season among Everton fans unhappy with the team's dull, dogged style under Moyes.

True, Moyes has kept Everton comfortably in the top flight for a decade, and has even earned European qualification four times.

But all four of those European campaigns came to ignominious ends, particularly the disastrous appearance in the Champions League qualifying rounds in 2005. Everton were unlucky to draw Villarreal, but the way they capitulated to the Spaniards was horrifying to fans.

And indeed Everton's consistency in the league has generally come at the expense of any notable cup runs. The Toffees have made only one Wembley final in the Moyes era - that was the 2009 FA Cup final, which they lost - with just two other semi-final spots.

Compare that to Alex Ferguson, who came to Manchester United in 1986 as the man who had made Aberdeen smash the Old Firm dominance in Scotland and masterminded a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final victory over Real Madrid.

In addition, Ferguson did not take over a strong and mighty Manchester United. Back in the mid-'80s, United were a mid-table club whose glory days were a generation behind them, and the Scot dragged them to the top of the game not just in Britain but also in Europe.

Moyes, meanwhile, has taken a club who had been surviving in the bottom half of the Premier League and helped them survive in the top half of the Premier League. Not bad, but not exactly groundshaking - and no more impressive than, say, the achievements of Tony Pulis at Stoke City.

Frankly, if Moyes had not been a straight-talking Glaswegian you could be forgiven for thinking he may never have had a hope of landing the Manchester United job. It's almost as though he's been brought in simply on the basis that he is the best-available Fergie-alike in the game today.

If it turns out that his Clydeside accent is the only reason he has landed the hot seat at Old Trafford, it won't be long before #MoyesOut starts trending again - and this time nobody will be asking why.

..Bennys view > Didn't take long for the Man Utd Universe to go to war
