WSOP 2015 Ready for Big Things .. May 31st 2015

The 2015 World Series of Poker (WSOP) looks set to be a record breaker. According to chatter from inside the Rio, more than 20,000 have pre-registered for Colossus event.

Getting under way today and with four starting flights, the $565 tournament always looked as though it was going to be a popular choice for player, especially with its $5 million guarantee, but very few expected such a level of interest.

In fact, if the early estimates are correct, then not only will the guarantee be pushed beyond then $10 million mark, but the tournament will enter the record books.

As it stands, the 2006 Main Event holds the record for the largest field ever with 8,773 entrants. However, when the Colossus kicks into life, that record will fall out of sight.

As well as the largest overall attendance record, the Colossus is also likely to break the record for the number of players in action on a single day in a single tournament. The record is currently held by the 2014 Millionaire Maker which attracted a single day starting field of 4,722 players.

Current estimates suggest that 5,000 of the confirmed 20,000 will take to the felt on Day 1A which would make it a clean sweep for the Colossus in terms of mass participation records and one of the most impressive live events ever held.

Beyond the Colossus, the WSOP 2015 is already in full swing and in the last few days the pros have been battling for the early honours in the $5,000 No Limit Hold'em event. However, before an established grinder gets to take to the main stage, Brandon Barnette was able to enjoy his time in the spotlight earlier today.

Lining up alongside 687 other players in the $565 casino employee event, Barnette managed to beat all before him, including Greg Seiden, to take home a bracelet and $75,704.
