Default Bolton Wanderers on slippery slope

Bolton Wanderers players go on strike and force friendly postponement (July 06 2018)

Bolton have been forced to cancel Saturday's scheduled friendly against St Mirren after their players went on strike over unpaid wages and bonuses.

In a statement issued to the Bolton News, the players said that with "deep regret" they would refuse to play the game, saying they had been left in an "impossible position".

Despite ongoing financial problems, Bolton secured Championship survival at the end of last season with a dramatic final-day victory over Nottingham Forest.

Citing their reasons for deciding to strike, the statement read: "Over the course of the two years on numerous occasions contracted players have not been paid on time. This has culminated in certain players not receiving their June wage.

"On each occasion, this has happened we have received no notification or an explanation as to why. We feel this is totally unacceptable after a huge effort from everybody over the last two seasons."

A short statement on the club's official website simply read: "Bolton Wanderers Football Club can confirm that Saturday's friendly game against St Mirren has been called off.

"The football club would like to apologise for any inconvenience this will cause."
