Phil Ivey - 'Game Over' Dude

Poker Star Phil Ivey Loses UK Court Case - By John McAuliffe

The last time we heard from poker star Phil Ivey he was being sued by Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa for card cheating. What Ivey was/is being accused of is using a tactic known as “edge-sorting” to fatten his pockets during games at the baccarat table.

Edge-sorting is a tactic that is used by players to identify design flaws on the backs of the cards in advance. Ivey requested a specific brand of cards, then had his partner, Cheng Yin Sun, instruct the dealer to rotate cards in specific directions. From there Ivey was able to figure out which card was which and pull a fast one on the casino.
Ivey has been accused of this at not only the Borgata, but also at a casino called Crockfords in the UK.

This brings us to the latest news on the poker star. Ivey has lost his court battle with Crockfords where they refused to pay him his winnings after he used this edge-sorting tactic. The amount that the British courts have refused him is around the sum of 7.7 million pounds, or $12.4 million.

In both cases Ivey has expressed his belief that he is not a cheater, rather he is just taking advantage of the casino’s shortcomings. “I believe that what we did was a legitimate strategy — we did nothing more than exploit Crockfords’ failures to take proper steps to protect themselves against a player of my ability — clearly today, the judge did not agree.”

Unfortunately for Ivey this ruling may have influence in his case with the Borgata, which the company is suing the player for $9.6 million for using the same edge-sorting tactic.

Bennys view .. This is what the Borgata Hotel Casino were waiting for ..Now they will get him 3:-)

Its always the same story....

If someone looses then thats the players fault...

If somebody wins they call foul.

Its the casinos fault and not that of Ivey who obviously used his knowledge of the card pattern to beat them.

Why didnt they stop him playing when he started winning.

I believe he was at one time he was over £1 million down....

We all know that the machines in the betting offices are doctored but as usual the punter has no comeback there.....:news:

Im no great Ivey fan but ....

Ivey requested a specific brand of cards
Surely the alarm bell went off then ....:h?:

Playing cards are the same where ever you go and what ever you use so why request ...?

I think yes they got an advantage by getting the deck they knew but surely its sour grapes by the casino once they found out they had been "out smarted"....

Plenty say card counters are cheats but are they?...to me they are clever people who try to gain an advantage ....:news:

We only hear these stories when casinos and bookies loose....

If Ivey would have used the same advantage and won £250k i doubt this would ever arisen so its the casino who lost more chasing their money that Ivey had already won...

Never chase your losses ...the casino should have quit long before the amount got to where it did....:loveme:
